What is REDEMPTION? What does it mean? What difference should it make in our lives? Paul continues to lay the foundations of the faith in our passage for today, Ephesians 1.7-10.
Foundations: Ethusiastically Chosen
Jan 15, 2012
We begin THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY with the most foundational of books, Ephesians. In the opening verses Paul sets the stage for lives lived dangerously by grounding us in all that God has done for us in Christ. It begins here.

Jan 08, 2012
In this week's service we launched The Year of Living Dangerously (TYLD). We looked at Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 11, his "dangerous life" and his passions for the people of his churches. In this sermon we laid out a blueprint for the year going forward. Welcome to The Year of Living Dangerously!

SENT! - Thereness
Sep 18, 2011
As we finish off our series on the purposes of God in Scripture, we look at Romans 10.9-15. Who is sent? Why are they sent? What does the word "sent" mean for us today? We start be hearing the story of an Australian man named Don Ritchie - a man with an interesting hobby.
SENT! - In the Eye of the Creator
Sep 11, 2011
In art and music we would never think of complimenting the paint or the instrument for the beauty of the art produced. Instead we would give credit to the Creator, the Artist, by whose talent the work of art came to be. What does the art of your life say about our Creator? Does it attract others to God, or not?
SENT! Two Great Moments
Sep 04, 2011
Pastor Kirbyjon Caldwell once said that there are two great moments in life - the moment you were born and the moment you know why you were born. For the people of God in the book of Exodus, the "why" of their existence was all about being a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. The same language is used later to describe the Church. What do these words mean? How do they apply to our lives and church today?
SENT! - Why Settle?
Aug 28, 2011
Adam and Eve settled for less than what God had in mind; the tower-builders in Genesis 11 settled, as well. But in chapter 12 God launches a whole new phase in his mission and his challenge to Abram is NOT to settle, but to move on. When and how do we sometimes settle for less than the Great Adventure God has for us?
SENT! - Imago Dei
Aug 21, 2011
The very first command God gives to humankind in the pages of our Bibles comes out of the reality that human beings are made in God's image. What does this mean? What are the implications for us today? Today we begin a new series on "God's purposes in the world," so that we might better understand how we are to live our lives and join God in his purposes in our world.

In Acts 7 everything changes. With Stephen's speech to the Sanhedrin and his death at their hands, the Early Church enters a new phase of existence. They cross into "liminal space" - over the threshold and into an important period of transition for the mission. The liminality involves risk and sacrifice and speaks to our lives and mission today.

What do you think of when you hear the word "repent"? In this week's passage the Apostle Peter offers us a challenge to re-orient ourselves in relationship to God, our own sin and our calling as heirs of God's promises as the way we experience true repentance.
Speech Therapy: True Revival
Jun 19, 2011
When Peter and John and some of the earliest believers find themselves threatened by the religious authorities, how do they pray? Do they ask for God's protection? For his deliverance? For the defeat of their enemies? And when they do ask, how does God answer? How might this prayer become a model for our own prayers?

Why did God pour out his Holy Spirit upon us on the Day of Pentecost? Was it for our benefit alone, or was and is there a larger purpose, a larger need for the Spirit of God at work in our lives? Listen and see just how "politically correct" the Spirit must have seemed on the Birthday of the Church.
Second Life: Not for Nothing
Jun 05, 2011
Everything we do and build and are for the Kingdom of God matters. Everything. The work we do here and now, our "labor in the Lord" is not in vain. It matters.
Second Life: Last Man Standing
May 29, 2011
We were all born into the image of Adam. The good news is that we do not have to stay there. God has made a way for us to bear the image of Christ, instead. We can move from living in the "natural" to living as those empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Second Life: Overlap
May 22, 2011
Having laid out much of his argument for the coming resurrection from the dead, the Apostle Paul moves on to answer questions about how this resurrection will happen and what kind of bodies will they be. This gives him the chance to talk more about where we are headed and us the chance to ask, "What difference does it make?"
Second Life: Get Busy Living
May 15, 2011
In this strange section of 1 Corinthians 15, Paul speaks from the heart in a seemingly random fashion. What is he trying to say and what does he mean by a "baptism for the dead"? Once again, there is more here than meets the eye. For those who deny the coming resurrection from the dead, there are consequences in the here and now, as well.
Second Life: Necessary and Inevitable
May 08, 2011
The Apostle Paul is convinced of our coming resurrection from the dead. Why? He's taken time to speak passionately to the reality of Jesus' resurrection, but does that necessary imply our own resurrections? Paul tells us that, yes, it does. Because of Jesus' resurrection, our own resurrections are "necessary and inevitable."

Second Life: Risen!

We all have two choices. We can obey what Jesus has been teaching us, or we can disobey. As Jesus finishes his Sermon on the Mount, he challenges us to make the right choices - to go the narrow way through the small gate, the way that leads to life rather than the broad way that leads to destruction. Which will it be for you?
UpGrade: The Prayer God Always Answers
Apr 10, 2011
In today's message we begin the transition to the end of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. In Matthew 7.7-12, it appears Jesus is telling us that we will get whatever we ask for when we ask God for it in prayer. But is that what Jesus wants us to learn? Or is there something more, something missional in the promise of the "good gifts" God will give us if we ask, seek and knock?

Mar 27, 2011
Jesus continues a message focused on stewardship and how we are to view our material possessions, money and the meeting of our basic needs. After all, if we hold loosely to money and possessions, giving them away freely to those who have need, can we trust that God will take care of our needs as well?

What does it mean to have a "good" or "healthy" eye? And how do we get it? Furthermore, what does any of this have to do with heaping up treasures on earth or heaven and serving two masters? In today's message we continue to learn what it means to live into the upgraded life Jesus offers us as it relates to our possessions and money. Once more, it's the way of life for which we were created!
UpGrade: Get Real
Mar 13, 2011
As we move into chapter 6 of Matthew's Gospel, Jesus begins a section on "works of righteousness" in the lives of his followers. At first glance it might appear that Jesus is teaching us on prayer, fasting and giving to the poor, but these things fall in the larger context of his instructions that we not live to impress others with our "religiosity". Instead we are to live are lives as if we are playing to an Audience of One.
Upgrade: Present Perfect
Mar 06, 2011
In this last paragraph of the first section of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches about love for our enemies. In our day and age we have many opportunities to engage our enemies - personal, national, political - but we often fail in fulfilling Jesus' dream of lives lived in accordance with God's opinion on the matter.

What is Jesus asking of us in this passage? Are we to become doormats, allowing others to run over us or mistreat us for the sake of the Kingdom of God? Are Jesus' words too difficult for us to follow? In our quest for an upgraded life amid conflict and even violence, Jesus leads us away from a fight or flight mentality to a third way, a surprising way a Kingdom way.
UpGrade: When Any Cause is No Cause at all

Jesus' words on divorce and remarriage have been used down through the centuries to wound and condemn many. But is there more to what's going on here than is immediately obvious? Is there Good News in the midst of what sounds like a harsh word from Jesus? Absolutely!
UpGrade: Ruthlessness
Feb 06, 2011
We live in a society that excuses lust and the objectification of others. Those who want to live the upgraded way of life Jesus offers, however, must take seriously the damaging effects of the lust of the eyes (and adultery of the heart). We must choose to be ruthless in getting rid of the things that war against our calling to live as faithful followers of Jesus.

As Jesus begins to transition from the Beatitudes to the main body of the Sermon on the Mount, he reminds his hearers that they are to be salt of the earth and light of the world, that they are called upon (as are we) to live in a such a way that our lives make a difference in the world.
Upgrade: Now for Something Completely Different (part 2)
Jan 16, 2011
Too often we've been taught that Jesus' beatitudes are an impossible ideal. But is this what Jesus intended when he announced the beatitudes (blessings) to those gathered to listen to him? Or is there something else he intends to communicate. In this second message on the beatitudes we look at the last four of the blessings.

Bad News, Good News
Jan 02, 2011
Just as with Cain, temptation or sin is lying in wait crouching like a wild animal ready to pounce upon us today. God is saying there is bad news and good news for Cain and us when we are confronted with Cain’s choice. That bad news is sin eagerly wants to have us, but the good news is we have a choice and we can master it.
